The helmet is awesome too!
Nice. I am possibly going to watch Interplanetary in the next couple of days. I will watch the trailers. Any idea why he went with that distributor? (I have not heard good things about them in the past...)
But it doesn't come out 'till March 15th!
I like the guys at POP Cinema/EI Cinema. I've never heard anything bad about them. They were straight up with us certainly (and Blockbuster screwed them on Millennium Crisis.)
I know, but I have a friend who is a reviewer who said I could come over and watch it with him--he already saw it once but liked it enough to watch it again.
And you can LIKE Pop, but did you get any MONEY from them? :)
POP/EI was the only legitimate distributor interested in Interplanetary, and I didn't want to self-release the movie. So the decision to go with POP/EI was a pretty easy one.
Also, I like the people I've dealt with at POP/EI. They seem honest and sensible, and I think they actually "get" Interplanetary.
Unfortunately, since I spent way too much money making the movie, I'm probably going to lose my shirt on the flick unless it sells like 100K copies. Which seems terribly unlikely given the DVD/VOD market these days.
Well, I only heard about them from a second-hand source, and it was a while ago...maybe they're okay.
But...you gotta sell 100K copies? Did you spend $250K on it? I mean, back in the good days my first flick Hunting Humans moved like 37K copies, and MTI was pretty freakin' happy. I think you're in trouble if you have to move that many.
You have a producer's rep, or did you just sell it outright?
And if you don't wanna use Andrew's blog for replies, you can always hit me up at kangas@kangaskahnfilms.com
I like using Andrew's blog for replies -- I agree with him that people should be more up-front about all this "business" stuff.
We didn't spend $250K on the movie. But we spent more than we should have because, when we started filming 4 years ago, the market hadn't gone to crap yet. I mean, we spent probably $15K on film stock and processing. These days, that just seems beyond stupid.
Maybe I'm exaggerating about the number of copies we need to sell. What's a distributor's cut of a DVD sale these days? $10? If so, maybe I only need to sell 30K copies. Or get a good TV deal. THAT would really help.
But, considering the market these days, I don't see either of those things happening.
I have tried to find a producer's rep, but all the ones I talked to were rip-off artists who wanted thousands of dollars up front. If you know any good reps, I'd love to have their contact info.
If there's anything you'd like to discuss off-Andrew's blog, you can email me at chance@crewless.com . Or you can get in touch with me through my blog: http://chanceshirley.wordpress.com .
You shot on FILM? Holy crap! (I mean, I'm an old guy too who loves film, but there's just no upside nowadays unless you're shooting 35mm, and if you're shooting 35mm then you've got money to spare...
Distributor's cuts are different--depends on your contract and if you put an expense cap. If you need to make more than 50K back from that company on your dvd, I'd bet big money you're not gonna make it.
I know a couple of decent reps, but they are choosy about their stuff. (not quality-wise, 'cause they've taken MY movies, fer Chrissakes :) -- but genre-wise)
I shot my first movie on Super 16mm, and that flick is so close to turning a profit.
We started Interplanetary way back in 2007, and things were a little different back then. Had I realized it wouldn't be sold till 2010, and had I paid attention to where the market was headed, I would have came up with a better/cheaper plan.
Live and learn...
Do you mind me asking what reps you like? Do they have a website, etc?
Will send ya an email.
And I am pretty upfront about the crazy shit that went on with all my movies--check any of my blogs at:
